Is the Crit'Air Digital Certificate Valid in France?

There is no standalone digital Crit’Air certificate, but you are not left with nothing while you wait. Shortly after your application is submitted, the French government emails you an invoice for the order, and printed at the foot of it is your digital facsimile: a detachable panel carrying your Crit’Air class, your registration and a QR code. That is what you carry until the sticker arrives.

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the terminology causes a lot of confusion. Here is exactly what lands in your inbox.

What actually arrives by email

The email comes from the service de délivrance des certificats qualité de l’air and has a PDF attached. The PDF is a facture (an invoice), issued by the Imprimerie Nationale, the state printer that produces and posts the stickers.

The upper part is an ordinary invoice: your name and delivery address, a dossier number, an invoice number, and the line items for the certificate and postage.

Below a dotted tear line at the bottom of the page sits your digital facsimile. The French text calls it the coupon that justifie le classement du véhicule dans l’attente de la réception du certificat qualité de l’air par courrier - it evidences the vehicle’s classification while you wait for the certificate to arrive by post. It carries:

• A QR code
• Your Crit’Air category, printed as the numbered coloured vignette
• Your vehicle registration number

So it is a receipt, and it is also your interim proof. Those are not in conflict: the French system uses one document for both jobs.

How to use it at a police checkpoint

If you are stopped by French police and asked for your Crit’Air vignette:

1. Hand over the printed page - the facsimile at the bottom is the part the officer needs, and it shows your class and registration together
2. Point out the QR code if asked - officers can scan it
3. Stay calm - your paperwork shows the vehicle is classified and the sticker is in the post, which is a routine situation for a foreign-registered car

The document is proof that your vehicle has been classified and the certificate paid for and dispatched. It is not the vignette itself, and an officer is entitled to expect the physical sticker on the windscreen once it has had time to reach you, so apply early enough that you are not relying on the facsimile for a whole trip.

How to save it to your phone

iPhone

1. Open the email and tap the PDF attachment
2. Tap the share icon (square with arrow)
3. Select “Save to Files” or “Add to Books”
4. For quick access, save it to your home screen via Files app

Android

1. Open the email and tap the PDF attachment
2. Tap the download icon
3. The PDF saves to your Downloads folder
4. Consider adding a shortcut to your home screen

Printed copy

Open the PDF on any computer and print it. Keep the printout in your glovebox alongside your V5C, insurance, and other documents. A printout is the better option here because the page is designed to be torn along the dotted line so the facsimile can be carried on its own.

What about ANPR cameras?

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras do not read the sticker on your windscreen, and they do not read your emailed PDF either. They photograph your number plate and check it against the French government’s vehicle database.

We cannot tell you exactly when your vehicle appears in that database relative to your application being submitted, and neither the invoice nor the covering email says. Treat the facsimile as what it says it is: proof of classification for a person who asks to see it. Do not treat it as a guarantee against a camera-issued fine.

The practical consequence is the same advice either way: apply well before you travel, so the physical sticker is on the windscreen by the time you cross.

When the physical sticker arrives

The physical sticker arrives by post from France, typically within 10-14 working days. Once it arrives:

1. Clean the inside of your windscreen where you will place it
2. Peel off the backing and apply it to the bottom corner of the glass on your right, as you sit in the driver’s seat
3. The physical sticker is then your permanent proof

Keep the emailed PDF anyway. If your windscreen is replaced or the sticker is damaged, it records your dossier number and your vehicle’s classification, which is useful when you apply for a replacement.
